How to set up a turntable in ten minutes

A hand placing a record on a turntable platter

Every turntable we sell arrives with a printed card, but here is the whole process in one place, so you know what to expect before the box arrives.

1. Choose the spot

A level surface that does not wobble when you walk past, with room for the lid to open at the back. Keep it away from the speakers of a separate system if you have one.

2. Unbox

The platter, mat and counterweight travel packed separately so nothing is strained in transit. Keep the box: it is the safest way to move the turntable later, and it is what you would use for a return.

3. Fit the belt and platter

On a belt-drive model, loop the belt around the motor pulley, lower the platter onto the spindle and lay the felt mat on top. Thirty seconds.

4. Set the weight

Where the tonearm has a counterweight, it is pre-set at the factory. If it has moved in transit, turn it until the arm floats level, then set it to the marked position. The card shows the mark for your model.

5. Plug in and play

Connect the mains lead, switch the preamp to the built-in position, choose the speed, and lower the arm with the cue lever. Bluetooth pairs from the button on the top plate.
